Penguins sign Staal to four-year contract extension
| NEW YORK (Reuters) - Jordan Staal and the Pittsburgh Penguins agreed to a four-year contract extension on Thursday worth a reported $16 million. "We''re happy to have him signed," Penguins General Manager Ray Shero said on the team website (penguins.nhl.com). "He''s a good fit for us. He''s been a good player for our team, a successful team -- which is important too. "I think it works out well for both of us. I''m glad we got it done at this point. I really didn''t want it to drag on too much longer." The second overall pick in the 2006 NHL draft, Staal has 11 goals and 21 points this season. Earlier this season, the 20-year-old center became the youngest player to play 200 career games. Staal scored 29 goals in his debut season, finishing runner-up to team mate Evgeni Malkin in balloting for Rookie of The Year. (Writing by Steve Keating in Detroit; Editing Peter Rutherford) |
